An ironworker from Michigan (John LaPointe) was watching television as the events of September 11, 2001 were unfolding. Moved by the images of destruction and despair, John was overwhelmed with conviction to head east and volunteer his services. Skilled in working with steel beams, he knew that his abilities would be needed.
"Iron man" is dedicated to John LaPointe and is also a tribute to all who demonstrated such heroism in the face of evil.
Iron man
Watch with unbelieving eyes
the scene as it unfolds
bricks and steel fall from the sky
dreams that i behold
wake me from this sleep i'm in
feeling much too real
i need to close these weary eyes
from all day cutting steel
all the day, all the day, all the day
ref
they're gonna need an iron man
someone who bends the steel with his hands
take the charge and give the plans
they're gonna need an iron man
an iron
vs
o.k. the sun awakens me
to this reality
sure, there's something i can do
drive my car to the east
someone's gotta lift a hand
face the darker scene
hope someday it will leave my mind
for now i need to be
there for us, there for them, there for me
ref
bridge
cannot wait and watch until the sun goes down
cannot sit and just look in their eyes
being moved beyond control
i must arrive
i'm needed now
oh, i'm needed
vs
staring at the image of just what it used to be
what once reached up into the sky
is now down in my knees
peering at the faces and the eyes
look straight ahead
i'll never get to moving steel
if i'm moved by the dead
move me on, move me on
move me on
ref
but can i be that iron man
or will it break this heart
in the end
rob me of this soul
to purge this land
they'll need a real iron man
an iron man
